What's in a name

From: http://www.thinkbabynames.com/meaning/1/Sebastian

The boy's name Sebastian is pronounced se-BASS-tian. It is of Greek origin, and its meaning is "revered." The original form of this name referred to those from a particular city or region of Asia minor, whose Greek name was from the Latin imperial title "Augustus." Saint Sebastian, who probably was a native of that place, was a third-century martyred centurion who became patron saint of soldiers. Shakespeare gave the name to the twin brother of Viola in "Twelfth Night." British use since the 1940s may have been influenced by a character in Evelyn Waugh's popular "Brideshead Revisited." Sebastien is popular in France. Track star Sebastian Coe.

Sebastian has 8 variant forms: Bastian, Bastien, Sabastian, Seb, Sebastiano, Sebastien, Sebestyen and Sebo.

From our friend in Switzerland:

In Switzerland we have three forms of Sebasti* according to the language region. (and as an indication of the frequency of the name I also indicate its ranking in a sample of 100'000 registered births)

Sébastien French (Rank 171)
Sebastian German (Rank 440)
Sebastiano Italian (Rank 561)

Sebastian (Greek, the venerable) is quite a noble name (mainly) in the region of Basel where he is affectionately  being called "Basti" (pronounced Baschti).
Sébastien is VERY good French. Correctly spelled is with the é but in the Swiss-German birthregister, you find both Sebastien and Sebastian, though I presume that in the English use it is also correct withouth the é.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Only you Mihai would blog such random information... Perhaps that's what sleep deprivation does to you. What about more pictures of the little fellow and happy family? That's what we'd really like to see here on your blog space! Hope all is going well!

Please post more pictures of Sebastien - the name posting is interesting, but since I can't read, I'd much rather see pictures of the baby himself! (Cheryl: I showed Em the pictures that are up, and she signed MORE after we looked at them.)
